Black & Taíno Youth Leadership Council
Co-presented by the Afro-Caribbean Cultural Center and B.L.A.C. (Building Legacy and Community)
The Black & Taíno Youth Leadership Council is a transformative program for middle school and early high school youth ages 11–16, co-presented by the Afro-Caribbean Cultural Center and B.L.A.C. (Building Legacy and Community). The Council is designed to guide and support young people during the pivotal years of middle school and into their first years of high school, ensuring healthy transitions and strong foundations for success.
The program centers art, culture, and leadership development, providing a space for youth to celebrate identity, heritage, and creativity while gaining skills in teamwork, accountability, and advocacy. At the heart of the Council is the use of Restorative Justice Peace Circles, where youth co-create collective guidelines, practice community care, and lead their own learning journey.
A key part of the curriculum includes exploring the Power of the Black Vote and the importance of civic and community engagement. Participants learn how their voices, choices, and leadership directly shape their communities and contribute to lasting change.
Through enrichment activities, cultural exploration, youth-led initiatives, and leadership workshops, participants gain confidence, cultural pride, and the tools to be effective leaders in school, at home, and in their communities.
The Council is funded in part by the United Way, NBCUniversal, the Leever Foundation, the Connecticut Community Foundation, and through program participant fees and family donations. Together, we are building legacy, strengthening community, and uplifting the next generation of Black and Taíno leaders.
