FAQs: Frequently Asked Questions

IS THE LATON TAÍNO LEARNING COMMUNITY A TRIBE?

The Laton Taíno Nation is not a tribe, it is a collective of Connecticut and Greater Waterbury Taino's who want to reconnect and learn about their Caribbean ancestors.  We are all part of a large network of Taino individuals and practitioners who are helping us reconnect.

We are honest with our future intentions to build up a  Yukayeke of our own and are working under the guidence and tutelage of  Taíno Elder/Behique Miguel A Sague Jr.   We must walk before we run and are on a multi year journey.  2022 we formed, 2023 we laid out our ground work, 2024 we will actively recruit paid members and work towards 2026 of becoming a full yukayeke.

CAN AN INDIVIDUAL JOIN THE TAINO LEARNING COMMUNITY?

An individual can apply to join the Laton Taíno Learning Community as well as organizations and groups whose members are from the diaspora.  All new members, that are accepted after their application is reviewed are placed in a two-year probationary period before they acquire the official membership card issued by The Laton Taíno Learning Community.
